My primary goal as a family dentist in Mount Prospect is to get people out of pain and do all I can to ensure that my patients are at their optimal oral health.  When patients are confronted by a cracked tooth, for instance, it’s important that they are given affordable and long-lasting options.

If one or more teeth are affected by chips, decay, cracks or other types of damage, same day dental crowns, also known as one-visit crowns, are the ideal solution.

But I also understand that cost is a major factor in people’s decisions when it comes to restorative dentistry.

That’s why I want to be as transparent as possible when it comes to the treatment plans I recommend and their cost.

In this article, I’m going to answer a question my team and I hear a lot: How much do dental crowns cost? I’ll delve into the different types of crowns, as well as whether insurance will help with the cost or not.

What’s the difference between a single-visit dental crown in Chicago and a lab fabricated one?

The clear difference between the two is the time.

Traditional crown fabrication is as follows

  • An impression is taken of the tooth.
  • The impression is sent to a dental lab.
  • The dental lab fabricates the custom crown.
  • The patient comes back a few weeks later to have the crown cemented.

Sometimes, there is an error in fabrication and the crown doesn’t fit as well as it should. When this happens, a new impression is taken and sent to the lab. The patient then has to come back for yet another crown fitting appointment.

Most of these steps are eliminated when a patient has a single-visit crown procedure

Dental labs typically have dozens, if not hundreds, of projects they’re working on at once.

A same day crown is made in a single visit.

At our Mount Prospect dentist office, we use a software program called CEREC® . After preparing the tooth for a crown, we use the CEREC scanner to take an image of the tooth. This is a 3D image of the tooth, as well as the structures surrounding it.

Then, the CAD/CAM software makes a 3D model of the crown. An onsite milling machine is then used to turn a piece of porcelain into a permanent crown based on that model.

CEREC is an accurate system that creates extremely well-fitting crowns. It also saves our patients a lot of time. They don’t have to wait for the lab to make the crown, and they don’t have to sit through dental impressions either.

Cost of Same Day Crowns

Now, you may be thinking – due to the advanced technology, the tooth crown cost must be a lot more than a lab fabricated one.

Actually, in our office, the dental crown cost is the same across the board. Crown fees range from $1475 to $1775 whether you get a same day crown or a lab fabricated crown.

The fee range depends on the materials used to fabricate the crown. Some patients are not the ideal candidates for all-porcelain dental crowns due to the amount of tooth structure they’ve lost. In these cases, it’s often best to have a lab make a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown.

Will insurance help pay for a dental crown?

Our Mount Prospect and Chicago patients who have insurance will find that most insurance companies pay between 50% and 80% of the crown cost.

It depends on the insurance company and the plan you or your employer has with them.

We want everyone to invest in their dental health whether they have insurance or not. That’s why we have a number of payment options that can make the dental crown cost more affordable.

We believe… that every patient deserves the convenience of single visit crowns

When I prescribe a dental crown, you can be sure that there’s a good reason for it.

A dental crown can restore a damaged tooth, but it also protects the tooth.

If a patient has a cracked tooth, they shouldn’t wait until the tooth breaks before they decide to get a crown. Placing a crown before the damage has done can actually protect the tooth from even more damage.

We can keep the crack from progressing, which can prevent fracture or even damage to the nerve.

We believe that providing the best dental care for my patients includes recommending treatments that can prevent further damage.

To add to the preventative aspect of restorative dentistry, we want you benefit from the convenience of advanced dental technology. We’re truly happy to be able to offer same day crowns to our patients.

There is less time in the dental chair involved. Therefore, less time away from work and drive time to see us for multiple appointments. It’s convenient, to say the least.
