Full Mouth Reconstruction Mount Prospect

We believe… that a full mouth reconstruction will put a smile back on your face

Is a full mouth reconstruction what your jaw needs? If you have severe problems that have developed with regard to your jaw joints – more correctly called the temporomandibular joints or TMJs, we may advise that you have a full mouth reconstruction. This is only suggested when your jaw, neck, face or back pain is due to teeth that have become badly misaligned.

A full mouth reconstruction may also be a wise choice as part of an extensive cosmetic redesign of your mouth that will correct problems that have become visually unattractive and improve your smile as well as your self-esteem.

Why TMJ symptoms can lead to a full mouth reconstruction

There are many possible symptoms of a TMJ disorder and often the cause is hard to diagnose. Many patients turn to us here at the Meyer Dental Group after discovering that treating their teeth can help to relieve their TMJ symptoms.

The temporomandibular joint or TMJ is an important joint that allows you to eat, drink, talk and bite. When your teeth become misaligned, it can put pressure on the TMJ, causing pain, not just in the jaw itself, but typically in unrelated places, such as the neck, face, and back. TMJ sufferers may also experience bad headaches or migraines, tingling or numbness in the fingers, eye and ear pain or difficulties in swallowing.

Many of these symptoms have their origin in what is called malocclusion or bad bite – when the jaws clamp together, any misaligned teeth can mean a bad bite and over time cause a TMJ problem.

Fortunately, many TMJ problems can be solved. From time to time, a person’s jaw may have become so painful that teeth may have to be removed or repositioned to help improve the bite. These procedures may be part of a range of methods as part of a full mouth reconstruction. In addition to improving the bite, this will also result in a more appealing facial appearance.

What’s involved in a full mouth reconstruction

When a full mouth reconstruction is recommended for you, it is unlikely to be a surprise. You will either have probably been experiencing considerable pain and other undesirable symptoms for some time or are aware of the condition and appearance of your teeth from continually staring at them in the mirror. Reconstruction procedures will depend on a full assessment of your teeth and analysis of what will help to reduce TMJ pain, if that is what is wrong, or improve the visual appearance of your teeth.

Reconstruction procedures may include several, if not all of the following:

  • removal of any damaged teeth that cannot be repaired;
  • replacement of missing teeth with a combination of dental implants, bonding or bridges;
  • use of orthodontic methods to move or reposition teeth that have become misaligned;
  • manipulating the position of the jaw by using a specially designed and shaped orthotic device;
  • the use of dental veneers, crowns and caps to improve teeth that have been damaged but can be repaired.

The aim of the reconstruction will be to give you teeth that are more natural in number and position, look better, relieve you of any TMJ related pain and put a smile back on your face.
