Sports Guard Mount Prospect

We believe… you should protect what you have while doing what you love

Sports guards are mandatory in many high contact sports. Most mouth injuries occur when children between the age of 7 and 14 are playing casual sports or doing activities like riding a bike or a skateboard.

Broken or lost teeth are the most common type of mouth injuries. Though jaw bone fractures and dislocations can cause damage that can have a negative effect for the rest of your child’s life. A Mount Prospect sport guard can help to protect your children and prevent painful injuries with expensive treatments.

There are different types of mouth guards available. The 3 most common ones are:

  • Stock sports guards: these can be bought at a local store and offer little or no protection
  • Boil-and-bite mouth guards: are molded to the child’s teeth but without the necessary support for the teeth and jaw
  • Custom-made sports guards: max. protection, more precise fit, minimal interference when breathing or speaking, more comfortable and durable

Why it’s better to get a sports guard from your dentist

Besides that custom sports guards are protecting your or your child’s teeth they offer a better airway exchange, better performance and are less bulky. There is also less probability of traumatic injury causing for example concussions, cuts, chipped teeth, broken teeth, traumatic abrasion, etc. which minimizes the chance of jaw and dental work (ortho, crowns, veneers, etc).

Types of custom-made mouth guards

Dr. Tom Meyer can customize a mouthguard in usually just two visits.

For a BASIC CUSTOM FITTED sports guard the first visit will take about 15-20 minutes and the second visit – usually within a few days – would take about 10-15 minutes to receive, check fitting and leave with the mouth guard and case.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE sports guards are made with neuromuscular computerized technology to find the exact jaw-coordinates which will allow for optimum oxygen exchange and jaw stability. This will increase the athlete's strength, balance, flexibility, speed, and agility. We will need about 1.5 hours for the first visit, and approximately 2 weeks later we will deliver the sports guard at the second visit, which will take about 15 minutes.

Depending on the type of sports guard and the options provided by the dental office, you may be able to match your team colors to your mouth guard.

The cost range will be $75 for a custom basic mouth guard and can range as high as $1200 for a high-performance sports guard in Mount Prospect
