Recently at our Des Plaines dental clinic, four of our lovely team members recorded a video outlining their New Year’s resolutions. Today, we will break down their goals and see why they’ve decided to strive for these particular dental resolutions.
4 MDG Team Members Share Their 2017 Dental Resolutions
We hope that by sharing these resolutions, the patients of our Des Plaines – Mount Prospect IL dental clinic will be inspired to make some dental resolutions of their own.
1. Kelly’s Dental Resolution: Mixing Oral Hygiene & Gratitude
“My dental resolution is to take 2 to 3 minutes during the day that I’m doing my rotary toothbrush and just be mindful of something that I’m grateful for…in the morning something I look forward to, and in the evening something that was good or grateful that happened during the day. So during the 2-3 mins I’m doing my rotary tooth brush, I’m going to take time out, destress and just be mindful of what I’m grateful for. Happy New Year!”
The resolution: Kelly’s main resolution is to reduce her stress. One of the ways she is going to do this is by doing some gratitude exercises while using her electric toothbrush. People tend to get bored while brushing their teeth, some multitask and others turn right to social media. For some reason, when we start brushing our teeth two to three minutes can seem like a lifetime. Kelly has a great idea: utilize those minutes by reflecting on what you’re thankful for and what you hope to achieve during the day.
Why this resolution is so important: Focusing on gratitude and staying positive relieves stress. This is important for everyone, but especially for people dealing with TMJ disorders. Stress causes tense muscles which can lead to horrible pain and headaches. Reducing stress means reduced pain.
2. Michele’s Dental Resolution: Cut Down On the Diet Soda
“My dental resolution for the year is to cut down on the diet soda that I drink – which is super acidic and not very good to my teeth.”
The resolution: Besides slowing down and finding the fun in each day, Michele is going to cut down on diet soda.
Why this resolution is so important: Most people recognize why it’s important to reduce sugary soda consumption: decay. Is diet soda a better alternative? Actually, it’s not. Soda of all kinds is extremely acidic. Acid causes erosion and leads to decay.
In fact, the Huffington Post published an article detailing a study that compared the effects of diet soda versus methamphetamines on the teeth. The study showed that it was difficult to distinguish the difference between “meth mouth” and “soda mouth.”
So, what should people drink? The best option is always going to be water. However, we understand that there are a lot of people who find water pretty boring. We recommend trying infusions of fresh cucumber slices or mint leaves. These taste great and won’t damage the teeth.
3. Mary’s Dental Resolution: Promote Overall Health by Removing Mercury Fillings
“After working at Meyer Dental Group for a year now and seeing the damage that mercury fillings can do to the tooth structure, my goal or new year’s resolution for 2017 is to have all my mercury fillings taken out and put white, tooth colored fillings so I can be my healthiest, this year for 2017.”
The resolution: Mary understands the damage mercury fillings can do to her teeth and overall health. That’s why she is going to have her old fillings replaced with tooth colored fillings.
Why this resolution is so important: Mercury is highly toxic. Even the World Health Organization recommends that dentists avoid using mercury fillings because of the damaging effect it has on the brain, kidneys, liver, and other vital organs. Every time a person chews or grinds their teeth who have silver fillings, a little bit of mercury is released into their bloodstream. To prevent the damaging effects of mercury, we only use tooth colored, composite filling materials in our Mount Prospect IL dentist office.
4. Shannon’s Dental Resolution: Protect Enamel by Reducing Coffee
“My dental new year resolution for 2017, is to decrease the amount of coffee that I drink on a daily basis. Not only does coffee stain the enamel of your teeth but it also can cause erosion, which can lead to sensitivity. So by decreasing the amount of coffee I drink on a daily basis, I will have healthier teeth, a brighter smile, and stronger enamel. Happy New Year!”
The resolution: Shannon wants super strong enamel and a beautiful, bright smile. The best way to do this: cut down on coffee.
Why this resolution is so important: The tannins in coffee are sticky and adhere to the teeth, staining the enamel. According to HealthLine.com, it only takes one cup of coffee each day to stain the teeth. Coffee is also acidic that it can cause enamel erosion resulting in more sensitive teeth.
