These include the importance of managing dry mouth and how missing teeth can impact your health and confidence, amongst other topics pertinent to seniors’ oral health.
My goal is to show you that there are simple solutions to your dental needs and concerns. Here’s a preview of what I’ll discuss. I hope you’ll be able to make this free event!
Dental Health for Seniors – Why We Need to Work Together to Manage Dry Mouth
Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, is the bane of many seniors. In fact, the majority deal with it on a daily basis. It’s uncomfortable and makes eating and talking difficult.
And yet, I find that many people who come to my Des Plaines/Mount Prospect dentist office haven’t had this issue addressed. One of the main reasons this happens is because it’s often overlooked by the patients themselves or their caretakers.
Chronic dry mouth is an issue that should be addressed immediately. Xerostomia (dry mouth) can lead to significant health problems, including:
- Dental caries and increased plaque
- Oral candidiasis
- Inflammation of the gums and mucosa
- Difficulty speaking, eating, and swallowing
- Painful tongue and taste disorders
- Burning and stinging sensations in the mouth
- Difficulty wearing dentures due to lack of lubrication from saliva
This is one of the main topics I’ll be discussing at my Simple Dental Solutions workshop. I’ll explain why seniors suffer with dry mouth (medications!) and I’ll also outline simple, refreshing ways to overcome symptoms.
Missing Teeth or Ill-Fitting Dentures Can Impact a Senior’s Overall Health and Confidence
Another topic I’ll be discussing at the workshop is missing teeth and dealing with ill-fitting dentures.
Studies have shown just how impactful losing a tooth can be on a person’s self-esteem.
Just because a person is in their golden years doesn’t mean that they aren’t affected by aesthetics. We should all be able to feel great about the way we look – at any age.
Beyond our confidence level, we have to think about our health.
Losing a tooth can lead to jawbone recession. There’s nothing holding the jawbone in place or providing vital nutrients to it. When that happens, the jawbone shrinks. This can make eating and talking difficult.
What’s Wrong with Traditional Dentures?
Many seniors have expressed that they cannot stand wearing their dentures.
Traditional dentures can have a tendency of making people look older. For some, they are the answer to missing teeth. But for the advantages they offer (i.e. biting and chewing), dentures lack one important quality. They do not stimulate the jawbone. They offer no help to reduce the look of aging.
Essentially, the jaw ignores traditional dentures and continues to regress. The result of jaw bone resorption is the “sunken” appearance of the mouth and the chin.
At the Simple Dental Solutions Workshop, we dive into how The Denture Fountain of Youth™ can give you back your youthful appearance and teeth that let you talk, eat, laugh, and smile – knowing they are secure.
